Apple has finally launched it’s much anticipated iPhone SE in India today, i.e on 8th April 2016. Apple unveiled the iPhone SE, at its ‘Let Us Loop You In’ conference on 21th March in Cupertino, California. The company is calling the new offering its cheapest iPhone model to date, with price starting at $399 (roughly Rs. 26,600) in the US. In India however, the starting price for the iPhone SE is INR 39000 for 16GB model and INR 49000 for 64GB model. The iPhone SE comes in Space Grey, Silver, Gold and Rose Gold metallic finishes. In addition, iPhone SE’s official accessories including leather cases in midnight blue and black will be available for INR 2900 and Lightning Docks in colour-matched metallic finishes are currently available for INR 3700. As for availability, the Apple iPhone SE is now available for purchase in India.
The 4-inch iPhone surprisingly comes with iPhone 5S outer shell and the same innards as the iPhone 6S. There are absolutely no improvements over its predecessor’s design except the new color options like Rose Gold. The 4-inch display has got Retina resolution (1136 x 640 pixels) same as other small iPhones. As expected, it lacks the 3D Touch support. However, things got better under the hood with the introduction of much faster 64-bit A9 chipset, which comes with two Twister cores clocked at 1.85GHz and paired with PowerVR GT7600 six core GPU to handle complex 3D games. The 64-bit A9 chip with M9 motion co-processor allows users to run every time at a lower power, including ‘Hey Siri‘ without having to pick up your iPhone SE, and a various fitness tracking capabilities like measuring your steps count and distance.
Apple has worked around the Camera department for iPhone SE but don’t expect better features than its bigger brother iPhone 6s. To say cheers, Apple has borrowed the same 12MP F2.2 iSight camera sensor from iPhone 6s, so you can expect pretty much the same quality output in photos and videos. There is also PDAF to capture photos fast enough and Dual LED flash for low-light photography. The enough processing power of CPU allowed Apple to enable the 4K video recording, so no worries at all here again. The lack of OIS is bit disappointment, but you have to live without it for now. The Selfie shooter comes at 1.2MP (F2.4 aperture), but the Retina Flash got improved since it can light up the screen up to 3 times brighter based on the scene. The other iPhone SE other camera features include Live Photos, video capture up to 60fps for 1080p video & 240fps for slo-mo, up to 63MP panorama photos, time-lapse with video stabilization and cinematic video stabilization.
On the other hand, the improved Touch ID along with NFC support does make a lot of sense in 2016, which further allow you to utilize the Apple Pay system. As usual, Apple mum on battery capacity but don’t expect it to run for two days like that, and you will eventually end up using one day on moderate usage, just like other iPhones. The device has 7.6mm thickness and weighs 113 grams, which shouldn’t be a problem at all even after longer times of use.
Besides the iPhone SE packs more LTE bands for better worldwide roaming, and it also supports VoLTE & Wi-Fi calling for high-quality wideband calls. The iPhone SE runs on Apple’s brand new iOS 9.3 out of the box. The latest iOS version brings new features to iPhone SE with the proactive assistance, improved Siri enhancements, powerful search, and a new Night Shift mode that uses your device’s clock and geolocation to adjust the colors automatically in the display. The other connectivity features of the device include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (dual-band), Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, GLONASS (Wi‑Fi + Cellular model only), NFC and micro USB 2.0 with a reversible connector.
Price & Availability:
The key selling point of iPhone SE is its pricing, and the 16GB version comes at INR 39000, which is much cheaper than any other iPhone model out there. The 64GB variant will run for INR 10000 more (INR 49000) at the base price. In the USA, you can also get it on typical two-year contract. All you need to do is head over to the respective carrier or retail stores for concrete details. Apple will be offering it on $17 monthly installments if you are interested in installments.
