WhatsApp Suffers Brief Global Outage, Causes Massive Freakout Among Users

Some WhatsApp users around the globe are reporting problems connecting to the popular messaging service.

WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app for smart phones such as the iPhone, Android phones, Windows Mobile or Blackberry. Whatsapp allows users to send and receive messages, photos, and other information and is considered an alternative to text messages or SMS.

The outage began around 1:00 a.m. IST (9:34 PM EST) is primarily isolated to the UK, Germany, some parts of the U.S, India, South America and South East Asia (see map below), according to Down Detector.

“Some people have had trouble accessing WhatsApp today,” WhatsApp said in an emailed statement. “We’re working to restore service back to 100% for everyone and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

New Year’s Eve is an especially busy time of year for WhatsApp. Last year 54 billion messages were sent that day.
